The original labeling identifies the sculpture as a limited edition and states that the edition was limited to subscriptions received by Easter 1987. That surviving information gives the piece unusually good provenance for a vintage religious collectible.
About the subject: Christian tradition identifies Jesus as a carpenter or craftsman, following the occupation associated with Joseph. Depicting Christ actively working at the trade emphasizes his ordinary working life before his public ministry—a subject particularly suited to a sculpture titled The Carpenter.
