A little music-box history: Mechanical music boxes turned tiny pinned cylinders or discs into miniature instruments, allowing a melody to be played without a musician in the room. By the 20th century, movements were frequently built into jewelry and trinket boxes like this one, making the box itself part keepsake and part small mechanical novelty.
